International Literacy Day is celebrated on September 8th every year by UNESCO to promote the importance of literacy for dignity and human rights and a literate and sustainable society. The theme of this year’s celebration is ‘Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies’. In accordance with it, the Department of Education, Patna Women’s College Autonomous, celebrated the day in the morning assembly conducted by the visiting M.Ed. interns of PG Department of Education, Patna University.

The interns highlighted the importance of literacy through a poem and elucidated on the history of celebrating the day. They further threw light upon the contemporary scenario of education and literacy in the context of India and especially Bihar.

The assembly prompted the teacher-trainees to reflect on literacy’s significance and promote it amongst our own neighbourhood and community. The trainees were inspired to take up the cause of spreading literacy in the society. The very energized assembly came to an end with the National Anthem.
